Visiting "Hidden Treasures" and Hiking Eagle Rock
Looking for a particularly magical hike this time of year? Well, one of our favorite places in all of LA is hidden up the winding roads of Malibu in a sweet little town known as Topanga. On our way to this hike, we have made it a tradition to stop at this place called “Hidden Treasures,” an incredibly unique consignment shop specializing in one-of-a-kind antiques and clothing, dating from the Victorian Era to the 1980’s.
Raptors, pirates, cowboys oh my! These are just a few of the friendly faces you’ll be greeted by when you pull up to the parking lot, located at the intersection of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Cuesta Cala Road.
Now have you ever seen such stylish busts? They actually donate 10% of sales of certain fur pieces to help save endangered species!
Pink glitter heart shades – reunited at last!
How about some lovely senoritas to help light up your night?
This one below must have come straight off of Steven Spielberg‘s mantle:
Oh and you must be sure not to miss the back porch area, it’s full of even more oddities – perfect for a game of “I Spy.”
Once you’ve found your “must have” item, this time mine was a 1960’s floral camping vest (I’m sure you’ll see it pictured in future posts), it’s just a quick 5-minute ride up to Topanga State Park, where you’ll find the Eagle Rock trailhead, aka one of the most magical hikes we have yet to discover.
Parking is $10 inside the park, or free right along Entrada Road, just be sure to park off of the asphalt.
Once you arrive to the parking lot inside the park, walk all the way to the right, you’ll see two signs, one on the left for Musch Trail and another on the right, pictured below.
We like taking the trail from the parking lot that starts just to the right of the sign above, hiking down Musch Trail for the journey back. This allows for just over 4 miles of sweeping views, plus loops are always more fun than 1-way hikes! Tip: be sure to veer to the left along the way, as there are a few confusing side trails that branch off to the right on the beginning section of this hike.
Shortly after we began, we heard something rustling in the forest…
Once we got over the enchantment of meeting our pretty little friend, we continued on a bit further until we reached the next sign, which pointed us left towards Eagle Rock.
We passed under dreamy canopies, perfectly shaded from the sun’s golden beams:
And met some of these little guys:
Soon enough, we started to notice Eagle Rock popping out in the distance:
And after a final uphill stretch, we finally arrived to the epic, eagle-shaped, sandstone rock formation:
Captured epic views:
And even got to listen to a flute player in the distance (yes really):
On top of that, one of my favorite things about this hike are the golden caves (that have literally been spray painted gold) that you can explore and relax in:
It's also necessary to note that Eagle Rock is especially magical and mesmerizing at sunset:
Yes, those are all birds:
For the return trip, we hiked back down Eagle Rock, making a right onto Musch Trail, towards the camp site (which is first come first serve for $7/ night). It took us about an hour to complete the 2nd half of this incredible trail.
So if you're looking for an adventure that'll take some of life's most incredible gifts and wrap them into one amazing package, visiting "Hidden Treasures" and hiking to Eagle Rock are sure to deliver.
Wishing you and yours a beautiful holiday season. Be a blessing and be blessed.
