Hiking to the top of Bell Rock 1,111 times!
Meet Peter, left, a diehard fan of Arizona’s distinguished monument, Bell Rock. This inspirational hiker has the goal of taking 1,111 people to the top of Bell Rock by January 11th, 2018, so Peter invited us to go with him as part of our CouchSurfing stay, and of course we were more than happy to accept!
Sitting at 4,919 feet, Bell Rock (map) is one of the most frequently climbed rocks in the area, although very few reach the actual summit. Because there’s no marked trail, most people don’t know that you can climb all the way to the top, but Peter knows the way and is more than happy to lead anyone and everyone he can to the top.
We started our hike on the West side of the rock around 3pm and scrambled our way up and over rocks and casms, with Peter leading us every step of the way.
You can faintly see the lightly worn path that the few who make it to the top follow:
Less than 2 hours later we had made it to the top, becoming Peter’s 2 newest members of what is known as the Top of Bell Rock Club. As hikers number 632 and 633, we were stoked to enjoy one of the most incredible views over the city of Sedona:
Peter told us stories of how he has lead people as young as 4 and as wise as 74 to the top of this 547 foot summit, including 3 dogs, 2 pregnant women, a baby in a carrier… and he is not stopping any time soon! I decided to add a yogi to his list:
We took our time enjoying the undeniable sense of peace that being at the top of Bell Rock gifted us with, which is something we will not soon forget:
If you find yourself in the Sedona area be sure test your talents and set your sights on the top of Bell Rock. No matter how old, young, round or small you are, as long as you believe in yourself, you can do it! You can also walk the entire length of the 3.6 mile Bell Rock Trail, catching views of Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and other landmarks along the way!
