How did he do it? Getting Engaged on Isla Tortuga with Calypso Cruises
Drew and I have been dating for almost 5 years now: It all started in college when we were chosen out of over 400 students to work together as brand ambassadors for JanSport (everyone’s favorite childhood backpack). In our interview they asked us what kind of jellybean we would be – I said popcorn, he said pina colada – we were sold! After our semester long internship was over, we realized we had totally hit the jackpot, with each other. It was a fresh, golden morning, we rolled out of bed – I put on my bikini, Drew put on his red board shorts – and we headed out the front door at 6:45am, both of us unaware of the life changing event that would take place later this day.
Our friends at Calypso Cruises picked us up in the (thankfully) air conditioned van for our hour long ride to Puntarenas (from Jaco). Here they served us a hot típico breakfast inside their private restaurant, which was absolutely delicious, and we all boarded the Manta Raya, our catamaran escort for the day (ooh la la!):
15 minutes in and they were already serving us silver platters overflowing with the most beautiful pineapple and watermelon we had ever seen (truly) – in stark contrast from the homemade picnics we are used to, it felt like we were receiving the royal treatment!
Look at that watermelon!!:
As we continued our tour of the Gulf of Nicoya, our morning was spent deciding between basking in the sun, cooling off in the deck top jacuzzis or eating more fruit – needless to say, we were feeling pretty relaxed by the time we got to our dreamy destination, Isla Tortuga:
Now, at this point I still had no idea that Drew was even thinking about popping the question on our trip, I was already in la la land just being in the present moment. Drew, on the other hand, had been stashing the ring with him the entire trip, alternating between his board shorts, sunglasses case and backpack, in anticipation of falling in to the right moment to get down on one knee…! Even thinking about this gets me excited all over again 🙂 Moments after stepping onto the sand, we were greeted by a steel drum band, a happy sleeping piggy and dozens of colorful, dancing crabs:
After getting acquainted with our little slice of paradise, they rounded us up for our snorkeling excursion. We hopped into our little boat and set off to one of our favorite places to be – under the sea.
There were hundreds of colorful little fish swimming all around us! We reached out to touch them but they were too quick for our hands:
Once we had our fill of snorkeling they brought us back to shore for a beautiful lunch set up under a canopy of trees and giant, glowing umbrellas:
After lunch was served, they presented us all with a glass of champagne, so naturally I got all excited and wanted to take photos on the beach with our bubbly. After commenting on how romantic the afternoon had been, Drew heard his cue. As I got distracted by the dancing crabs in the sand, Drew retrieved the ring from his sunglasses case and got ready to make me the happiest girl alive.
We went for a long walk along the shore, walking and talking until there was no one but us.
Drew set the camera up on a little palm tree stump so we could take a short video, I didn’t think twice about it. “Oh, this must be something for our blog,” I thought to myself. Then, as he came to stand next to me I could sense something was different. A few of life’s best moments later, he got down on one knee and I said “Yes!” before he had the chance to finish asking the question:
As a girl you imagine this moment a million times over: where it will happen, what you’ll be wearing, who the lucky guy will be, how he’ll ask and how you’ll say that one fateful word. Then, when the actual moment finally arrives, it’s as if all of time stops, nothing matters but you two… and, if it’s right, you realize that the real deal is way more incredible than anything you could have imagined in a million years.
For the rest of the day it was as if were suspended in an even mixture of pure bliss and disbelief that this dream was really coming true. As we set to sea, the Captain made an announcement of our engagement, everyone cheered as they served us glasses of champagne, and we did what we did best that day, we glowed:
With nothing but a sunburn, my love and a new cherished memory, I couldn’t have left that amazing little island any happier or more excited for all the adventures that await us!
A special thanks to wonderful crew of Calypso Cruises for giving the rest of our lives an unforgettable start!
