Bike Riding Across The Old 7-Mile Bridge in Marathon Key
Morning 1 of our trip we awoke to the most beautiful sparkling waters and clear blue sky. We were in Marathon Key, the 10-mile-long island community conveniently situated in the middle of the island chain, and more notably, home of the famous 7-Mile Bridge.
With 42 bridges connecting the islands of The Keys, the 7-Mile Bridge was one of the longest bridges in existence when it was built. Constructed from 1909-1912 for trains, a 2.2 mile long portion of “Old Seven,” is still standing and welcomes walkers, runners and bikers alike. It’s also an incredible spot to watch the sunset.
As we rode along, a hundred feet to our left was the newer 7-Mile Bridge, built from 1978- 1982, for cars, etc. We had originally thought that we could bike that bridge, but after seeing the 2-foot wide space between the speeding cars and the concrete wall, we opted for “Old Seven.”
The ruins left behind by the 1960’s Hurricane Donna, which destroyed a portion of the bridge, contrasted with the serene, glittering ocean waters, made for a stunningly dramatic effect:
And as we made our way back to land we found the perfect little spot for a dip:
With our toes in the sand and the sun on our face, we could not have asked for a more beautiful way to spend a Monday. We’ll take this over a day at the office any day!
