Austin's Best Outdoor Art Gallery: Castle Hill
3 stories of crumbling concrete, dripping paint and raw talent invites artists and admirers alike to scale the walls and explore the layers of soulful messages that cover this inspiring place known as Castle Hill.
One of the largest outdoor galleries in the US, Hope: Outdoor Gallery, as it is also referred to, was developed to provide muralists, graffiti artists and community groups the opportunity to display large scale art pieces driven by inspirational, positive and educational messaging.
The project also activates and beautifies a dynamic yet underutilized space with a great view of Austin! We arrived on a rainy Saturday afternoon and were surprised to see the number of people who were trudging through the mud to scale the walls and check out the latest works on display:
There were door frames to climb through and sketchy ladders to crawl up, with new things to discover around every corner:
When we finally made it to the top we were presented with a perfect, yet foggy, view of the State Capitol. Note: On a sunny day this would be the perfect place for a picnic!
There were also graffiti artists spraying up a storm!:
As we made our way down the muddy steps we looked back to find one more masterpiece we just couldn’t pass up:
Tips for making your own visit awesome:
If it’s raining tie plastic bags around your shoes. We saw other people doing it… they were smart.
Bring a picnic if it’s sunny out, the top is a great place to relax, enjoy the view and people watch.
If you’re an artist bring spray paint! Leave your mark and create something beautiful for future visitors to admire and love 🙂
